This is not a rant post. This is my take on an issue. Take it for what it's worth.
In the last couple of weeks I have noticed a growing atmosphere of negativity in the beauty community on Youtube. I'm not talking about haters who leave silly comments like "OMG YOU'RE UGLY!" or stuff like that, but negative vibes from viewers who watch YT guru videos. After finding this video and also after receiving a lot of negative comments on entering contests recently, things have just come to a head.
I think viewers need to think about a couple of things. First of all, YT to most people making makeup videos is a hobby carried out in spare time. Many of us have full time jobs, are in relationships, have children, have other hobbies and friends that take up a lot of time. Once you reach a certain number of subscribers, it's just not possible to answer everyone's questions, emails and comments. I get hundreds of comments, messages and emails each day - to reply to them all in lengthy responses would be a full time job in itself. I'd love to have that kind of time to respond to everyone, but frankly, I just don't - I'd be sitting in front of the computer all day, every day. Maybe if I was in high school, or unemployed, or a student or someone who maybe has a lot of free time, I would be able to do so. But I don't, my job and other areas of my life would be suffering. In the beginning when I started on YT, I'd answer everyone's messages because frankly, I just didn't get that many. Is that possible now? Unfortunately, no. If you are unsubscribing to people just because they don't answer your message, it's really a loss to you. Would I ever unsubscribe to someone just because they didn't reply to my message? Certainly not. I realize that people have a life outside of YT, especially if they are bombarded with hundreds of messages every day. I mean it applies to anyone who has a large following - Fred has over 1,000,000 subscribers on YT. Do you think he gets around to answering every message/comment/question he gets? Anyone who expects him to is clearly naive to say the least.
The second thing is, ANYONE can be a Youtube "guru". Anyone. Create a Youtube account, change your settings to "Guru", upload videos and presto. Being a "guru" doesn't give you a higher status or anything of the sort, even if you have a lot of subscribers. It just means people are appreciating what you do and enjoying watching your channel. I am so thankful to my subscribers and it definitely makes YT a lot more fun, but some subscribers ask a lot from you. Some questions are easily answered by Google, searching other videos, or checking the video description box. Watching someone's video to me is already something I am thankful for, thankful they took their time to make the video and put themselves out there like that, so that I can learn from it. Anything beyond that is just a perk, hating on that special effort is pretty damn low. When it comes down to it, YT is about sharing videos - we are not your personal makeup assistant here for your every beck and call. It should not be taken for granted that video makers answer all your emails and questions - it's a nice gesture but it's not something that should be so easily demanded. It seems lately that viewers just automatically expect these things. And while we do try to answer as many questions as we can, it's just not possible for us to always do so.
I honestly think Gurus have the hardest lot on Youtube. Because we create a "How To" kind of video, we are bombarded with additional questions. If we were listed as Directors and just made comedy videos, do you think we would get the same volume of questions? People would post "haha so funny" and be on their merry way. So being a "Guru" entails an even larger time commitment than some YT users can even imagine because it's the nature of what we do on YT. I'm not saying it's not enjoyable and that it's a pain in the ass - on the contrary! But it means we just can't be here for everyone, every time.
I think some people are losing sight of what the YT beauty community should be all about - having fun. I am sure that's why most other video makers started their channel and continue making videos, because it is a fun hobby and great way to interact with like-minded people. It feels lately that this "fun" is starting to diminish by all the negative lash back. Why do people feel the need to make a video bitching about other people who spend hours of their own time making videos? Why not invest that time into doing something creative, doing something positive, instead of tearing others down? It makes me very disappointed. I don't think most people are in this for "Internet fame", I know I'm certainly not and I certainly don't think of myself as some kind of celebrity. I'm just a regular girl who likes makeup and likes sharing that passion with others. I started out the same as anyone else, knowing nothing about makeup, and somehow now have over 40,000 people watching me put on makeup. It even baffles me sometimes! But I've been passionate about makeup art before YT and I would still be passionate about it even if I wasn't doing this. If anyone ascribes fame to me, it's the viewers, not myself. I don't see it as a popularity contest either. I just do my thing and let others do theirs and am happy for them. If people like what I'm doing - cool! If not, oh well.
I hope this has clarified some things. I really do appreciate my subscribers and please understand if I don't reply to your email/comment/message - it's not that I think I'm so great and you're not worth my time. Please realize I just do not have time to answer everyone's questions, or your question was already answered either in the video, in the description info box, on my blog, or on my FAQ page. I don't want to have to worry about offending someone just because I don't have time to answer their messages. I realize that as someone who asks a question, it can be frustrating not to receive an answer. But it's not personal and it's not because we don't care. I was thinking of starting an off-topic YT channel a while ago, but I'm thinking I won't now - god forbid someone will be pissed off if I don't invest adequate time in it!
Thanks for reading, and hopefully understanding.
Important update:
It has been brought to my attention from a subscriber that someone on Youtube is saying - without any proof whatsoever - that I created a second account and am leaving hateful, racist remarks on people's profiles....???? I don't even know what it is referring to but:
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FALSE.
It disgusts me that people stoop this low out of whatever reason they may have to say such things about me which are completely void of truth and knowledge. I only have one account on Youtube and that is MissChievous. I would never sign up a second account to leave disgusting hateful comments. I have no grievance with other video makers and am completely against starting any kind of drama, it is not the atmosphere I wish to promote. I cannot believe that things have gone this far that I actually have to negate such ruthless, vile and despicable lies.

Im subscribed to you and many other makeup gurus on youtube and I totally see your point. Sometimes, yes, you would love to get an answer or an e-mail from your favorite YT guru, because to us, is like, we see you everyday like we see a performer on tv, and we admire all of you, but, since you're a regular person, we feel like we would be able to get in touch with you easily, unlike the people we see on the telly, you guys seem and are more reachable, and maybe that's why some subscribers think that it's totally possible for you to answer any doubt and be friends with everybody. Though I totally understand, when I watch a video that has been on for less than an hour and already has like 250 views or more, you get an idea of what you guys face everyday, thousands and thousands of comments, questions and what not. And that, like any of us, you have a life and this is just a hobby like you said, and pretty much an amazing gesture to clueless people like me :P.
So yeah... I hope people starts getting it, 'cause we wouldn't like to dissappoint you to the point of not wanting to make videos anymore, cause we LOVE them.

I've noticed the same thing Julia. People ask questions that are so simple and easy to find. It's frustrating to see it. I don't make video's, but I do see the comments like that. It's not a question and answer session, but they make it that way. They don't get paid enough to take the verbal abuse. Besides the fact that it's cowards with no real picture of themselves that do the majority of rude commenting.

I completely agree with you!! You are doing a wonderful job and I watch you all the time, but I don't expect you to be my best friend just cause I watch your videos. I would have never thought that you had that people would treat you that way it is ridiculous almost scary how demanding people you don't know you can be! However I love you! And your doing so wonderful, I will continue to be patient sub!

I think some people have not yet got the status on YT like yourself and other guru's yet to realise that it does become alot of work to keep up with replying to everyone.
Julia, and the rest of the YT guru's, keep going!!
For some reason, the word "jealousy" come's to mind.

You are so right. I think, too, people should realize that you guru's are regular people. I consider all of you makeup artists (professionally trained, or not - you all live up to that name!). I appreciate you taking the time to film your passion ans upload it for everyone else to watch and learn. So THANK YOU, yor the knowledge, dedication and damn good job you do!

You do a great job! I admire everyone who invests the time and effort to make videos for YT to share their knwoledge with us. It is always inspiring to watch the videos. Personally I don't understand why someone would tear others down just because his/her question isn't answered or they just don't like the video. Instead of being negative they should either make a better video or just keep quiet.

While I agree with many of the points you have stated, I do feel that there are some "Guru's" that exude a certain air of supremacy which I feel for what YouTube is, is unnecessary! And so can understand why she would feel the urge to make such a video.
It doesn't bother me, as I couldn't care less to be honest! I'm an aspiring makeup artist and take whatever tips and tricks I can from the tutorial and leave all that over BS politics behind!
Make no assumptions and we’ll all do just fine! - To solely rely on the Guru or the information given within a video or blog post, without doing my own follow up research, is to my own detriment, if I want to take my craft further! - That’s my personal take on the matter! - Although I don’t think she meant the video to be negative, but more of a means to discuss the matter at hand! Hmm!? Who knows!
PS. Thank you for introducing me to Nireyna; I’m loving the technique she uses for her eyeshadow as it was new to me!

I saw that video and I wanted to leave a comment but I thought it might end up as adding fuel to the fire. I'm still laughing about one thing though...the Beyonce thing. Oh yes she totally has time to answer what eyeliner she was wearing in that one photoshoot.

She's just annoying. That video you posted. Urgh. I wanna bitch slap her. Have people not heard of google.

Wonderful blogpost! I agree with you completely! There has been so much negativity lately, and it is such a shame. I think people really need to realise that this is not our life, just a hobby! xxx

thx u !and hope u'll answer me!

Julia, I feel so sorry that all the negativity affects you so much :( I've never expected any of the gurus to do anything, I'm just grateful that you're there, sharing your knowledge and passion, and I enjoy watching your videos a lot. Just keep on going, girl, I appreciate everything you do. Rock on! xxx

Hear hear!! Totally agree!
What annoys me the most is the sense of entitlement some people seem to have...ugh just be happy there are even people making the effort to post a 'how to' or tutorial video on YT..
Also...I think we live in a time where people think nothing of making rude comments. Think before you type! Internet may still be a place where you can be anonymous but that does not give you the right to be rude or downright hateful...even a comment like 'omg you're ugly' is unnecessary it's being rude for being rude...what's the point in that?
Keep on doing what you're doing Julia!!

Rocaille - It doesn't affect me in the sense that I'm gonna lose sleep over it, hehe. But it does kind of take the fun out of things if some people are just out there spreading negative vibes and wasting their energy making negative videos to tear down people who are trying to just have some fun. And I guess I do have a big mouth and if I feel strongly on a subject, I'll just voice my opinion it it, hehe. Thanks for your comment.
Douchka - I do understand French.
Patience - I hope you do not consider me to be someone who exudes a haughty attitude. I certainly don't feel that I am but who knows? But sometimes people misread others, I'm not sure who you are referring to (nor do I really want to know) but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I know a lot of people were hating on Petrilude in that video and I personally don't find him to be arrogant, even though I'm not a part of the alleged "rat pack". But people pick things up differently I guess.

This was a pleasure to read. I know you've wondering whether or not to talk about it but I am glad you did.
"When it comes down to it, YT is about sharing videos - we are not your personal makeup assistant here for your every beck and call." & "I honestly think Gurus have the hardest lot on Youtube. Because we create a "How To" kind of video, we are bombarded with additional questions." ---> I agree with this 100%
People tend to lose sight of those facts and it definitely needed to be highlighted. I hate it when subscribers are so demanding like that. As for nikkie who did this video, putting into shame the name of petrilude, i just find it totally disgraceful. Never felt for 1 minute ignored by him nor by you. It makes me want to cry how much this whole thing has affected me. I know I know, I should get a life, but better being addicted to youtube than to drugs and stuff like that.
at: 10:38 PM said...
I agree with you completely. I don't mind if my question is answered. usually i only post questions and hope that another viewer will know. But i usually don't assume the guru will be able to - and its fine!
But i was a little annoyed when u put down students have a lot of free time. That is a awful generalization. Maybe a student who is taking classes just to take them but serious students who are heavily involved in student groups, community work, and a job are just as busy. Be careful making generalizations. :)
at: 10:41 PM said...
Antonea: I was a student too. I guess I just had more free time as a student than now when I have a full time job, even though I was involved in extra-curriculars. But everyone's experience is of course different. I didn't mean to offend/generalize.

Julia I think you are a Guru that keeps in touch with your subscribers. I mean you do chats, blog, blog tv, twitter, youtube, pictures. That´s a lot! Plus I do understand that you gurus are normal people with normal lifes, jobs and so on. In my own opinion you do a lot! so much more than just YT. I´ve notice the bad atmosphere for a little while, well, since the Lauren Luke´s contest. I´m so sorry that people can´t understand that you have a life and I´ve read the questions and some of then have been answer in the video itself and in the info box. For example, in every video you make you list the color of you nailpolish, somehow people keep asking and asking about it. C´mon people!! I understand where are you coming from, so keep in mind if I ask something about one of your looks I´ve already did research and couldn´t find an answer! :) but that doesn´t mean if you don´t respond I´m going to hate you forever! Keep the good work! I´m always checking you blog and YT channel to see what you been up to! I think it would be really cool if you do a video of like 20 random questions like what´s your favorite food? so we all subscribers can get to know a little more about you! Take care!

Well said!.
In all honesty, I share the same love for cosmetics as we all do and really do enjoy looking at videos on YT, to the point where I considered posting my own little 'mini reviews'.
Not to say I thought about really devoting a lot of time to it, just figured it would be a nice hobby on the side. But after seeing so much harsh criticism -- anywhere from "YOU ONLY DO THIS TO GET FREE THINGS!", "YOU'RE JUST ENDORSED BY [COMPANY]", "You have no life making videos!" and other ridiculous comments that appear on even well-known gurus.. To say I'm hesitant would be a severe understatement.
At the same time, I have the utmost respect (WITHOUT kissing butt -- another comment I see frequently in responce to anyone who DOES give compliments to gurus) for everyone that doesn't care and DOES create videos on YT for their own reasons. I think it takes a pretty decent person to not crumble under some of these petty comments -- even if they ARE trivial and silly.
It's a sad thing how people in general can ruin anything and everything, but I hope it doesn't impact beauty videos too negatively in the longrun. :(
at: 11:01 PM said...
What's ridiculous about that video is that she only has around 3000 subscribers. Yet she is comparing herself and what she is capable of to people who have 30,000 subscribers. They are no way on the same level. The sheer volume of messages that many subscribers can generate is not something that can be dealt with in an hour or two.
Even more ridiculous is that she is comparing being in another room sewing and being able to run to the computer to other committments such as jobs, children and families. If you're at work, even if you have access to a computer you are likely not allowed on youtube or other personal sites. If you have a child that needs attention you can't just run off and leave the child while you answer your messages.
Another thing, what was the point of that video? What exactly is it going to achieve? Absolutely nothing. The only thing it does is create negativity and conflict in what is supposed to a community. Personally, I think she made the video because she knew it would cause controversy and give her notoriety.
at: 11:03 PM said...
I responded to her video in agreement. In agreement that there are some who have this supremacy like Patience has mentioned but I also noted that they have thousands of people who write to them and obviously, people SHOULD understand that they can't respond to every comment/message all the time.
I wanted to say a lot of comments on here are just as bad as the ones I've seen on youtube. Hypocrisy. Calling someone ghetto or bitch, however it is, doesn't make things or your belief on the subject any truer.
Her problem seemed to be more with Twitter and I don't follow that mess at all to really post an opinion on what goes on there. And also, I'm assuming how some Gurus only stick to one another as oppose to reaching out to all Gurus out there? (and can I say I hate that word lol)
Julia, I hope this doesn't get you down or whatever. True - YT is nothing but a hobby yet no one made them do it so like being a celebrity, being a YT "guru" - complaints comes with the territory and backlash should be expected sometime. There is never a happy medium with all this lol... and about YT contest. I believe none of them should happen at all unless the person hosting it chooses the winner themselves or else all hell breaks loose.
Anywho - for that reason I only stick to blogs or forums now a day, LOL.

I'm a student at the moment & I'm making videos on YT (under the same name) & despite the fact that I can have some spare time, it's still sometimes hard to find the time to make videos. I'm just starting out so I don't have as many questions & emails bombarding me, but even the little amount that I do get is quite overwhelming. Making a video takes a lot of time to make & prepare & I don't think some viewers understand that.
However, saying that, I do understand in a way what the girl in the video was saying, some people are a bit cliquey & that's sad, because there's some fantastic people that don't have as much subs and what not. But to unfollow someone because they didn't answer a question is ridiculous!
I noticed the negative atmosphere on your contest entries & you know it's just because they're jealous. Petty really, but you're going to get that everywhere. What I thought was nice, is the people that were backing you up.

Wow, it is disapointing that you believe students in high school and students in general have lots of free time. It's quite clear how out of touch you are with the lives of students today. Perhaps your schooling was not vigorous, but it is very offensive to assume a student has loads of free time. Something tells me that if you have time to make 108 youtube partnered videos and keep this blog and twitter, that you have quite a bit of free time yourself.
Do you really think that youtube makeup gurus don't do it for the "fame" they get? Because I know I have never seen allthatglitters21 or juicy07 or fafinettex3 or xsparkage or petrilude give a "shout out" to someone that recognized them in a mall or at a MAC collection premier or someone who sent them a gift. Maybe you really don't see how much these guru's love their fame because you are on a different continent and don't find yourself reaping their "fame" benefits, but I really disagree with you on this point.
Another point I'd like to make is how presumptuous it is to say that makeup gurus have the hardest lot on youtube. I am glad you have explored EVERY facet on youtube to make this claim.
Lastly, if this was truly a hobby and just for fun, why bother with the youtube partnership at all? I don't know too many hobbiest who complain about getting paid for their craft. Or let them unsubscribe so you can carry on with your life or not address the issue whatsoever if it really didn't matter? Or if it is such a pain in the ass, give up the partnership and then perhaps your subscribers would not be so demanding of you.
Just a suggestion.

Annonymous: Funny that you don't leave your name or website link - don't have the guts to post your opinion under your real identity? And what on earth does being a Partner have to do with it? Partnership means extended minutes first and foremost. I can finally upload videos over 10 minutes in length - the Nr. 1 reason I joined the Partner program. Do you think I would have any less questions if I wasn't a Partner? What a ridiculous notion. Why shouldn't people be partners? I certainly put enough time in it to warrant it as a second job, and trust me, I'd be earning MORE money if I picked up a regular second job, compared to how much I earn through YT which I'm certainly not getting rich over. And I'm not that out of touch with students, I went to a rigorous university not so long ago. I can def say I have less free time now with my current job, but again it depends on what kind of job you have. People work different hours. Read the comments before hating.
at: 11:41 PM said...
I'm really sorry there's so many negative people out there. I watch the makeup channels on youtube so that I can be further educated about makeup. I don't watch them or comment expecting a response - who has time for that? It's unrealistic to expect you to cater to your subscribers. I hope this doesn't deter you from making videos - I really look forward to them.
at: 11:51 PM said...
Hi Julia. I watched that video and it seems to me that she and other people who leave hater comments are just plain jealous because they're not as talented as the gurus they watch. I have no problem understanding that you guys have a life beyond YouTube, and that some of you choose to keep a few things private. That's totally fine and we respect that.
I love your work and I think you are fantastic! Ignore the stupid people who say otherwise. =)
at: 11:58 PM said...
Very nicely said, Julia.
I may be one of those few viewers who all ready knew you couldn't answer every single question. Frankly, I become annoyed when watching a video and I want to make a comment only to find the log filled with spam (i.e. chain letters) or questions like "What color is your nail polish?" "Where can I find _______product?" when it's all in the sidebar where YOU, the author, too the time to write out links and the names of something. I rarely comment as is (I'm Stella_Lilly on YT) due to Cerebral Palsy in my wrists and I generally have other things to be doing than leaving comments like walking my crazy Decker Terrier. I leave comments when I'm really impressed with a video and wish to express that or I have a question that can't be answered on google or your sidebar and wish for your input. I watch the people I watch in the beauty network of YT for inspiration and they make tutorials I can follow. I sometimes have those lulls of inspiration where I have no idea what I want to do and I go there to watch my favorites and say, "Oh, I'll do something like that today!"
I've always admired how brutally honest you are in your videos and blog entries, whether it's people stealing your videos or this. It takes confidence to be this honest. I love Scrangie for her honesty with nail lacquer. If I want to know what a nail lacquer is like, I go to Scrangie's blog. Some people sugarcoat it to please their readers and viewers, but you two go above and beyond and really speak your mind. Thank you for being honest.
I hope you're doing well and I can't wait to see your next video!

I'm a fairly new reader to your blog and went through and watched a ton of your videos over the weekend, just looking for inspiration.
For me, thats how I see it - as a source of inspiration. You're not my YT Bitch, sat waiting for me to snap my fingers and give me whatever info I so desire. You're just someone who takes the time to make these videos to help people out who maybe dont have as much knowledge. We all have to start somewhere, right?
Of course, it'd be lovely to be able to reply to everyone but when its hundreds of comments people have to be realistic - and a little bit resourceful - google it, research it, whatever. Remember that the person making the vid is a person...with a life.
For what its worth, I think you're doing a great job and that the vids are a valuable resource for those of us who aren't naturals with the application techniques. As others have said I hope this doesn't put you off making the videos in future because they're so helpful!
at: 12:19 AM said...
Time, accessibility, tools, conditions, planning, creating, editing and so on… all the efforts to do a quality "how-to" video. Sometimes, what bothers me most is reading a detailed description box and see someone asking a lot of questions when the answer is just there. What is this? It’s pure laziness, lack of respect to the creator’s work. Frankly, I wouldn't waste my time replying to those messages.
There's a misunderstanding here, Youtube is a large community, it’s impossible to reply to every single comment.
A coin has two faces, but sometimes it's easier to see one side only.
Lack of time and ingrateful are two different things and we can't put all the people in the same bag. Anyone with common sense understand it!
Keep going the good work Julia!

I totally agree. I saw the particular videos and I was like...what? I am subscribed to a lot of people on Youtube, and not a single one of them seemed like they have a "stick up their ass". I have thought about making videos for a long time, but I don´t think I am that great with makeup, and I honestly think it would be taking up too much time.
That´s exactly why I appreciate every single person who puts themselves out there and makes videos. It´s a shame that people even post hater comments! No matter if someone is an actual makeup artist or if they are beginners....there will always be someone that benefits from their videos.
I don´t understand why people are turning the whole YT deal into something so serious. I never messaged a YT guru, just because I don´t expect them to take the time to write me back. I mean, doing videos, editing them etc takes up so much time ALREADY. I don´t want to bother them really. I´m just grateful that they do videos in the first place.
It really makes me mad. Some people can be so ungrateful

hi julia,

I agreed with her on two notions: one, the Twitter thing and two, the "arrogance" thing. There are some popular Gurus who seem to have such a stick up their ass it is ridiculous. They act as if we the viewers owe them for God knows what, when they were the ones who decided to make videos in the first place. Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything... so don't act like you deserve some sort of special treatment (not directed towards you, Julia). Both Guru and viewer are voluntarily doing what they want.
Re: Twitter, if you aren't going to take the time to answer "fan" questions, don't make things like that public. Simple as that.
HOWEVER-- People expect so much out of Gurus it makes me sick. People: Gurus don't owe you shit, simple as that. They are doing these videos on their own time when they want, how the want. Your requests, questions, comments, etc are all secondary. I am sure there are some that do videos specifically to "please the public," but I am willing to bet that most do these videos out of sheer boredom or just for fun. Also, most of the more established Gurus LIST THEIR PRODUCTS IN THE SIDEBAR or say them in the video you JUST WATCHED. Its pitiful how some of you act!!! Like puppies who are handicap. You were smart enough to make your way to the video, now I'm sure you can make your way thru OTHER videos, google, cosmetic company websites, etc to get answers! Use your head!!
Julia, I love the professionalism of your videos and blog. Everything is set up so well and unless you are slow you can find everything you need while watching the videos or reading the description box. Another thing I like is that you give lots of recognition to lesser known, talented Gurus. It shows you appreciate their talent and you want everyone to know about them. Some Gurus plug their fiends or family members and abuse their popularity to give others undeserving light, but honestly everyone that you have "plugged," is truly talented and I appreciate that.

I understand that it can be frustrating but I love love temptalia.com...even though I know that Christine have tons of people asking her question but my questions always get answer the very next day or so...so I'm gratful for her...
Not only that....I agree that sometime the quesitons is already there but people are just too lazy to read or listen...I love you guru video because I learned so much and anything that I wanted to know, its all on either this or that video so thank you...

hi Julia
Great blog post! You made alot of interesting points. I just watched that other video of her complaining and to be honest I thouroughly enjoyed it only because it seems like it has gotten to be a bit boring in the makeup community and she spiced things up. I know it sounds bad of me to admit it but I really don't take this all so seriously as most people do it seems. I hardly ever leave comments or questions on videos only because I know it probably won't be acknowledged but it never offends me. I don't expect "gurus" to spend all their free time to answer hundreds of silly questions. I rate 5 stars when I really like something and move on. People need to get a life outside of youtube or twitter and not take things so personally like that. Can you imagine their real life...walking around with hurt feelings all the time. Good grief.
All this drama reminds me of highschool...and it's silly of me to even be enjoying it. I really need to remind myself that real people's feelings might be hurt.

oh and one more thing, lol
I don't know if you have any contact with Nireyna...but I really hope that her youtube account is not being messed with anymore. I was horrified when I saw a hacker assuming her identity. Do you know if she is changing her youtube account?
Btw, I just wanted to say that...though I have subbed to many makeup gurus, I have 3 favorites. You being one of them and Nireyna and the pixiwoo sisters! All three of you are terrifically talented and I never fail to watch and rate a video :)

*le sigh* For crying out loud, it's YouTube! People take this way too seriously!

Rule No. 1 of the Internet: Don't Feed the Trolls.
at: 3:34 AM said...
Hi Julia, I just wanted to say I agree with you and these people need to grab a life. I feel bad for them because they are not happy people they are soured and all they want to do is sour everyone else but too bad for them because it doesn't work. At least not for me. I think you are Amazing, Talented and Ispirational!
I truly appreciate and value every single subscriber!!
at: 3:45 AM said...
very well explained
at: 6:39 AM said...
Thank you, Sarah...no feeding the trolls!! Think about this, everyone. Here we have an electronic box that we sit in front of...we are amused, shocked, and educated by what comes out of our computers! And we are all connected through our computers...WOW what a mighty small planet we inhabit!!! Though I'm almost 40 and not new to makeup, I am new to the makeup tutorial/video/blog scene. A million "Thank Yous" to those who help people like me learn the difference between a primer and a plumper! This box that we sit in front of is for entertainment, education, or whatever! Enjoy it! I turn on my computer after a long day at work, blah blah blah. I hope that gurus like you, Julia, and some of my other favs have put up a new blog or video so I can learn more. If not, I'm not crushed because YOU DO HAVE A LIFE! I am indebted to you for what you and others have taught me so far and for what you give to this community. Just keep doing your passion because there's enough of us "luv ya's" here on the planet to squash the "haters!"

Hi, Julia! I just wanted to let you know that I admire your work and that.. that video was so frustrating to watch. Hahaha! I don't know, it was even more frustrating to see people's comments. You definitely keep in touch with your subscribers. I have your blogspot bookmarked because even when you're not making youtube videos, you're updating us on other stuff! What's there to complain about? Everyone should understand that it's just youtube and people do have lives; they don't have to devote themselves to strangers in the first place. Sigh, but anyway. Thanks for everything!
at: 10:24 AM said...
Hello, thanks for your time and your shared of knowledge , My same filling with every one ...This drama is silly. Let's move on :)
at: 11:06 AM said...
Great blog, your way of writing things down is great! I think your totally right and i saw the video and she really doesnt understand that people have a live outside of youtube! And who you talk to on twitter, come on, you talk to the people you want to talk to!
I am afraid that if things are getting so negative, people stop making videos and that would be a complete shame!!! i hope things arent going that far!
(excuse my englisch its not my first language)
at: 11:40 AM said...
Well said Julia :) Keep up the great work you do and don't let this stuff get you down!
at: 1:22 PM said...

Is there a link to this video? Not trying to feed the trolls just want tp better understand what everyone is talking about.
at: 3:26 PM said...
I didn't really wanted to enter this whole discussion, but I just have to say something. I don't make YT videos for numerous reasons (lack of money, lack of products, lack of knowledge, lack of guts ;), and so on), and I TOTALLY admire every single person who has the courage to get out and make them. Because of that courage alone, I do not dare to comment bad on ANYONE'S video - who am I to comment if I do not even have my own videos up there. I do not use Twitter, I personally think that it is a horrible idea to begin with, like some sort of Big Brother - why, in the heavens name, would someone, especially people who do not know me at all, would want to know what I do/where I am during my normal day [stalking alert ;)]?! If you put yourself out there that way, people will usually presume you are ready to be followed, and that's when problems arise.
I realize that Gurus cannot answer all the comments and emails, it's virtually impossible considering the number of subscribers and messages they have/get. But also, some of the subscribers are just plain idiots (my apologies for the language) - having questions that are already answered in the description box and in the video gazillion times before. I am thankful to every Guru (including you) who have answered my questions on numerous occasions - THANK YOU! Your opinion has a true value to me and it does affect my decisions about buying a product or not.
And in the end, I realized that usually Gurus attract people with personalities similar to their own, which is normal. I do not watch people who "do not sit well" with me, and also, I do not judge those people because it's pointless - their values, attitudes, opinions etc. are so different than mine. Everyone should stick to who they like and respect, and when they start to lose that respect, they should just quietly unsubscribe and go about their business elsewhere. That's my personal opinion.
PS I hope that a few stupid comments will not deter you from making more videos in the future, because they are really AWESOME [whenever I say awesome, I feel like a teenager; why is that ;)))) ?! ]
at: 4:08 PM said...
Well said! :)
It baffles me to see people ask "where can I buy these products?" - you're on the internet already! Google it!
at: 6:48 PM said...
Couldn't agree more. What I find funny (irratating but funny) is when people ask a question that is answered in the video itself. Watch *all* of it before you ask a question! I make a few videos myself, I've actually had people ask me to do serveral months-long tests on a product I just reviewed. Yeah I have time for that. I work two jobs!
Just know I am a subscriber of yours and I appreciate that you take the time to make your videos. If people don't want to stay subscribed to you then they will not have the benefit of your expertise! They're loss!
at: 7:30 PM said...
Julia, I totally understand where you are coming from. I have asked for your recommendations on products a few times. I never got upset though if you couldn't write back;you are very busy! So, sorry if asking those questions made you feel obligated to answer. I just really value your opinion on all thing beauty-related. much love, God bless, and people will come around :-)
at: 9:55 PM said...
I totally understand your frustration. I have been working in the beauty industry for years now and love watching youtube guru's myself! It's such a great way to get idea's and see what other people are doing with makeup! I blog often and was thinking about doing video's but I don't know how you have time to do what you do!! That's why I haven't ventured there yet, I don't think I could do it justice at this point! Keep doing what your doing and don't worry about the haters! I hope this negativity doesn't cause some of the guru's I love on youtube to stop making videos!!
at: 10:46 PM said...
ShugAvery chiming in....
I hope that you pay attention to this less. You just can't please everyone. And honestly, if you don't have haters you're doing something wrong. You and alot of others on YT have high visibility and if you have umpty thousand views best believe a portion of those viewers will find fault with you. And you're talking viewers from all different backgrounds with different issues and different motivations. The particular video you posted is from a person who's pushing a product.. that video got her highest views.. you see the deal.
keep it in perspective girl
at: 11:27 PM said...
Hi Julia - I just wanted to say that your tips have improved my make-up skills, and hence have improved how I look and feel about myself. Plus, your videos, especially your Beauty Through the Ages series, have a unique take on make-up that sets them apart from other gurus' videos.
I was so thankful to catch you on the Blog TV chat and sneak in a question (about primers). I'm sorry that some people are diminishing the fun you get from YT, but I can assure you that your subscribers are still very appreciative of your expertise!
at: 11:36 PM said...
Oh Good Lord Julia! Was not able to watch the complete video because it's such a waste of time! Don't spend to much time justifying anything or anyone (including yourself). You absolutely just dont need to!
You do what you do with passion and care and if someone needs that much specific attention well then, they can have their own channel and get in the spotlight full blast!
It's easier to put down someone than to lift up oneself isnt??? So keep up the good work and dont pay attention to that kind of behavior. It's just simply not graceful and way toooo dramatic to be credible. And by the way, we are talking makeup tips here and not saving lifes!
Take care sweet heart!
at: 11:40 PM said...
I'm a subscriber to you YT and I follow your blog ... ignore the people who don't have the common sense to look things up themselves, you do a fantastic job and are a great inspiration! :)
at: 12:59 AM said...
You meant it! And yes! I understand you, of course....it's a little...stupid don't understand that you have your real life...your family...your work....but it's even more stupid...doing a video like that saying too many.....
at: 3:36 AM said...
Wow what a shame drama has to ruin fun on Youtube. I guess everyone has a right to their opinion though. I thought her comment about 'Would Beyonce do that??' was too funny. Uh... no Beyonce wouldn't do that because she is rich enough to HIRE A TEAM of people whose job it is to answer and maintain her websites, emails, phone messages, snail mail etc. lol
at: 8:30 AM said...
I agree with you Julia... I never expect my comments to get replied to because i automatically assume that the person is flooded with a million comments. And i don't take offense at all! The girl in the link you posted is so annoying...she is acting so self-righteous just because she replies to all her comments or whatever.
at: 11:01 AM said...
julia,i totally agree with you...and not only replying all the comments, but reading them also, is a job in itself! how come some people can be so mean?!?i am so forever gratefull to all the gurus that i follow, and you because,i got to know a lot of makeup, products, sellers, shops, and ideas, and how to apply makeup in different ways...
i do think, that those people that are so demanding, are the least giving people ever, they should be happy, that some one like you and the other gurus, invest money( buying products),time, research, effort and passion into those videos and we can have them for free!!!!
YT is just another way of learning about makeup, people can buy books, read magazines,go to the shops to have free makeup lessons,etc...the list is endless!,instead of being mean,to the gurus...
after all there is life after YT and makeup!
ps:i am a fan, because you are such hard working, talented and dedicated person,a real amateur in the very meaning of this word... a lover of the makeup artistry!
at: 11:27 AM said...
I don't understand why some people get offended when Gurus don't answer their questions. Very often, the answers they need are in the sidebar or in the video! Also, it's so obvious that the gurus on YT have lives with a job, friends, children and other... What's wrong with some people?! Do they expect you to give up your lives and stay all day long on YT?! o_O
I'm so sorry you almost had to justify yourself, because if these people had a little bit of common sense, they would not expect that much from anyone.
I enjoy your videos, have learned a lot from you and love your honest reviews.I can't thank you enough for taking time for making, editing and posting them.
Take care.
at: 5:09 PM said...
Hi Julia, just wanted to say that I am really grateful for all the time you take out to post on your blog and upload those videos. I've learned so much from you and I hope you won't let those ridiculous people get you down.
Take care!

I think that you need a student who answers your huge amount of e-mails. Pay him/ her well. ;-) I have to say that I'm pleased to watch your vids (especially the make up art/ masks section) and I don't think that I have to ask you 100000 quessies about this and that. I tried to ask an artist I know about a special work of art he did. Guess what?! He kept silent. The best thing is to find the answers on one's own. As for me, I've learned much more in searching for them in books or in the WWW. All in all, I consider your vids as some works of arts that satisfy my aesthetic drive respective curiosity. So, don't overrate the consumers' opinion, just follow your own creativity and stay beautiful!

I'm sorry that some people have decided to send these negative vibes out there and I'm glad to see that most of my favourite 'gurus' (yourself included) have responded to it in a very professional and positive way. You're tremendously talented, so just keep doin' what you're doin'!

hi, some question in general (maybe the answers help to make up my mind about this sujet):
can one be partner with just a few subscribbers? and does the yt payment for a partner depend on how many subs a guru has? like the more subs the more money??
at: 12:27 AM said...
I am not entirely sure of YT's criteria for becoming Partner, but I do believe a number of factors are at play: How frequently you upload videos, how many views your videos get on average, the amount of traffic you generate to your channel, and the quality/style of your content. Subscribers doesn't absolutely correspond, but if you only have very few subs, it's less likely that your videos will get as many hits. YT basically sells ad space on your videos to clients wishing to advertise on your videos, if YT feels that your videos will not be attractive to potential clients, there is less of a chance of becoming a Partner because YT has to be able to market your videos to advertisers willing to pay for ad space. But that is only a part of the criteria, I'm sure others apply.
Payment by Adsense is dependent on views of and clicks on the actual ads. So if you have 10,000 subscribers but the video with Adsense on it gets 50,000 views, you will be paid by views generated on that ad (so 50,000 views in that case.) Of course that doesn't mean you get paid $50,000 it's actually a very minute amount. Check out the Adsense homepage for more info on how it works.

I just watched this video and browsed some comments. Some people are saying you made a fake account and left racist remarks. Don't know how true that is...
at: 1:20 PM said...
Linda: Wow are you serious? That is def taking things way too far. That is downright low! Why on earth would I do that? I only have one username on Youtube and that is MissChievous. If I have something to say I say it under my real name. Who on earth is saying I have a fake account and left racist remarks?? That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard yet.
at: 7:00 PM said...
hm, you didn't allowed my last comment to be on your blog... what was wrong with it? the link? i did not mean it to be against you or what you've said. i just read the discussion board over there about this sujet and thought it might be a different angle on seeing this. not like it was my very own opinion or s.th.
but ok, it's your blog and you can post (or not) whatever you want to.

People are jealous. They will say anything to bring others down. You are my favorite guru because you have integrity. You show a skill and are well-spoken. You also are well informed. This makes you a target because you aren't "cutesy" and speak you mind. It's sad that such good things make people want to bring you down. Screw 'em. You're great.

shame on all haters, and really, not you nor any other person should have to explain and defend themselves to h8rs!!! I love your vids, and I'm suscribed because i enjoy watching and learning.
thanks for all those wonderful tuts!
at: 11:44 PM said...
Props to you MissChievous for saying your piece in a polite and respectful manner. There is a simple solution for anyone who doesn't like a certain guru, don't watch the video, there problem solved. The whole "they owe us something" attitude is extremely flawed and ridiculous. The videos have always been about fun and putting out information. If people like you and you are good you might get some perks but that usually comes after A LOT of videos and time so you earn it.
Anyway let 'em be petty foolish most rational people know that YT is for fun and leave it at that.
thanks for making the all the great videos you do. I draw and it is a great way to get ideas for character make up.
at: 11:31 AM said...
MissChievous, unless the comment that "Linda" referred to was deleted, I don't see where anyone in the comments of that video said those terrible things about you. Perhaps someone here was trying to play a cruel joke or start some drama. Just thought you should know.

Wow, some people are just mean & hateful. Julia, you're one of several YT gurus that inspire me & I hope you'll continue to make vids. It's insane that someone would expect any YT guru w/lots of viewers & commenters to reply to every single comment/message. Keep making those vids girl! :)
